Reef-Safe, Cruelty-free Sunscreen

Summer is officially here! 🌞

So today, let’s talk sunscreen.

What’s the issue with Regular Sunscreen?

Not only are many common brands of sunscreen forcibly tested on animals like rabbits and mice, but most sunscreens we buy in stores have two main ingredients that are known to bleach and kill corals, oxybenzone and octinoxate.

Approximately 6,000-10,000 TONS of sunscreen containing these ingredients fall into our oceans every year (1).

Recently, Hawaii took the measures to ban sunscreens containing these ingredients after finding out in 2017 that 56% of the Big Island’s coral was bleached, along with 44% of West Maui’s corals, and 32% of Oahu’s reefs (2).

Below I have compiled a list of vegan, cruelty-free AND reef-safe sunscreens.

Using minerals like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, these brands of sunscreen can effectively and safely provide broad-spectrum protection from the sun (3). (Safer than regular sunscreen, as long as you don’t use the aerosols, which are generally considered unsafe anyways)
